Too Many Internal Links from the Index Page Means How Much?

Today, I got a good question from an lj-user: 'Too many internal links from the index page means how much?'
Is 100 too many? Or 200? Or 1000?
I answered that it depends on the site, and the percentage of the pages with such links. So, 500 for a large site won't be harmful, but even 50 for a rather small one may be not so good. What do you think?

RockMelt

Now using RockMelt browser. Together with 4 other popular: Google Chrome, Mozilla, Opera, and (oh, my gosh :D ) IE.
For more information what it is visit rockmelt.com . But it's beta, yet. And you can download it only if you are invited: either by some of your facebook friends, or by a rockmelt team member. The first variant is MUCH faster ;) Btw, by now I've got 4 invitations left. So, if you need, I can send ;)

Why I recommend using RockMelt? It's a social browser, so it has amazing features interconnecting with facebook, twitter, lj, or any other rss feed. I work with pravmir.ru. It is a mass media site, and having the rss things always on my right bar is right what I need ;) Even if you promote no a mass media thing, and the content updates not so often. Anyway, it is perfect to use for promoting the sites on the social networks :)
